McIntosh Street is a fair snapshot of the housing here: grand Federation-era houses, several heritage-listed, on blocks subdivided well over a century ago.

Queen Anne and bungalow-style homes from the 1890s through to 1915 dominate the older streets. Mid-century houses and newer apartments fill in closer to the railway line and the highway strip.

Ageing hot water units are the single biggest source of after-hours calls we get from this stretch of the North Shore. Households here often run the same unit for decades without touching it, and it rarely gives any warning before it stops.

There's a second pattern showing up regularly too. Renovation projects on these older houses keep turning up gas pipework too old to pass inspection, meaning an upgrade before the new kitchen or bathroom can go ahead.

The land itself sits on a shale ridge dropping toward Stony Creek and the Ku-ring-gai Flying-fox Reserve. Yard drains on the steeper blocks can scour badly in a heavy downpour.
